For today, we will rename the ‘ingredient of the week’ blog title to ‘really awesome and special VALENTINE’S DAY TOPPINGS FROM SWITZERLAND!!!!!’. It’s pretty long so we probably won’t mention it again. But in case you couldn’t figure it out, we are pretty excited about the new items we have recently gotten (did we mention they are from Switzerland?) We have a whole tab exclusively for ingredients we think would go great on your Valentine’s Day custom chocolate bar, and this post is going to talk about the four most recent ones we’ve added.
The first, and probably our favorite, topping we’ve added is the plaque that says ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’. This plaque is made out of dark chocolate and is completely edible (and very tasty.) Specially designed just for Valentine’s Day, thi
s addition really sets your custom chocolate bar apart from all others (and really gets the message across.)
The second ingredient we added is a heart (a little over the size of an inch) that has ‘thank you’ written on it. We added this to the Valentine’s Day tab because we feel that ‘thank you’ is a good message for Valentine’s Day. Whether it is a friend, family member, or special someone, saying thank you is always appreciated (especially when it is accompanied by a delicious chocolate bar.) A lot of people deliver the message of love on Valentine’s Day, but sometimes a simple Thank You can go a long way. We really recommend this ingredient to separate your Valentine’s Day gift from others.
The third ingredient we are featuring is a large heart (again a little bigger than an inch) that has ‘I love you’ written on it. This heart is great not only because of what it says, but also the detail that it has. Whether it’s the smaller hearts in the left hand corner, the border framing the heart, or the beautiful script of the message, this topping looks very classy. It also tastes delicious!
The fourth and final ingredient we added is a large chocolate heart with smaller pink hearts on
top of it. Whereas the other two hearts we have featured on this blog create a really classy look to your custom chocolate bar, this large heart definitely adds a lighter and more fun feel to your chocolate bar. If you’re looking for some other toppings to combine it with, we recommend you try the Sweetheart message hearts which we think also have a lighter feel to them.
Chocolate has always been given as a gift on Valentine’s Day. When you combine the high quality chocolate we import from Belgium with the premium ingredients we’ve imported from Switzerland, you get a chocolate bar that goes above and beyond anything you’ve had in the past. And that is what we are about at Chocomize. Giving you the opportunity to create something you can’t get anywhere else. We’re really excited about these new additions, and we hope you’ll give them a try!
They liked us so much that they mentioned us on their website as a great Valentine’s Day gift! You can see what they wrote about us by checking out their blog here:
http://blog.teamfox.org/2010/02/02/a-special-valentines-day-idea/
We totally agree with them (we are huge narcissists at Chocomize.) In case you haven’t noticed, we’ve added a new Valentine Day’s ingredient tab that contains all our special ingredients just for the holiday. We recently received a shipment of new toppings from Switzerland that is sure to delight anyone who gets them on their custom chocolate bar.
As Chocomize begins to gear up for Valentine’s Day, we are constantly adding new ingredients that fit with the holiday. Over the next couple of weeks, the ingredient of the week will be something related to Valentine’s Day and will be found in the new Valentine’s Day section (check out our creation station if you aren’t sure what we’re talking about.) This week’s featured ingredient is the always popular sweetheart message hearts!
For those of you who don’t know (which we’re pretty sure is impossible) message hearts are a delicious sugar candy made into the shape of a heart. So what do they say? Well these hearts have a bunch of different short messages, all related to something romantic. Personally, my favorite message is ‘lets kiss’, but Fabian was looking pretty sad this morning so I made him a small chocolate bar and placed a heart that said ‘sun shine’ on it. That cheered him up (although it could have just been the delicious chocolate.) No matter what message you end up getting (we try to get them all on your bar) these message hearts really make that custom chocolate bar a great Valentine’s Day gift. So instead of just giving someone a boring ol’ box of hearts, make sure you give them a Chocomize bar, the perfect custom chocolate bar (hmm maybe we should trademark that?)
If you’ve been checking out our press page, you‘ll have noticed all the fantastic reviews we’ve been getting. We think our chocolate is the best out there, but we understand if you don’t want to take our word for it. We recommend you read some of the reviews we’ve gotten (we think they’ll do a good job convincing you that our chocolate is awesome.)
So for everyone in the Philadelphia area, we will be on the 6ABC morning show around 6a.m. on the 9th of February. For all those Chocomize fans who are not in the Philadelphia area, we will post the video as soon as possible. Get excited to get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at Chocomize!
Chocomize is excited to introduce a new way to customize your chocolate bar!
For those of you who don’t already know, the idea of Chocomize is that you can custom design your own custom chocolate bar. Originally, that meant you could choose from three different types of chocolates, white, milk , or dark, and around 75 different ingredients. As we have grown and progressed, however, we’ve increased our ability for you to customize your chocolate bar.
T
he most obvious way we’ve improved the ability to customize your chocolate bar is by adding ingredients that YOU have requested. We started with around 75 different ingredients, right now we have close to a hundred! We could not have done that without input from people who just wanted to have what they thought was the perfect ingredient for their chocolate bar. We are ashamed that we never put some ingredients on our website from the beginning (graham crackers and caramel come to mind), others weren’t so obvious (think bacon, sea salt, cayenne pepper), but have proved to be extremely popular. We want, and we are glad to have, ingredients that people think are high quality and delicious, so keep on suggesting!

Pretty soon after we launched, we started letting people customize the packaging for their chocolate bar. This option was really popular for bigger orders such as weddings, corporate gifts, or any other kind of special occasion. Customers can send us what they want on their packaging, such as pictures, messages, etc., and we create a label to cover the packaging. This really makes Chocomize a great option for any occasion.
We are proud to offer our newest way for people to customize their chocolate bar: being able to print images and messages on the chocolate itself! This might be the coolest way to create that perfect custom chocolate bar. Whether it is a picture, slogan, company logo, or really anything you can think of, we’ll put it on the chocolate bar. And don’t worry, it’s completely edible (we would never put anything in chocolate that wasn’t.) Check out this sweet image (yeah pun intended) of a chocolate bar we made.
So if you want to know how to add an image to your chocolate bar, or design labels for your packaging, or if you have a great new ingredient, make sure that you let us know at info@chocomize.com. Remember, the possibilities are literally endless!
It’s that time of the week again. We’ve had a lot of great recommendations recently, but our favorite has been the request for graham crackers. We tried them in our chocolate and we added both regular graham crackers and teddy graham crackers!

We aren’t sure why we didn’t think of this before. It seems so obvious, especially when we’ve been eating snacks like smores all our life. And that brings me to some more additions we’ve made to the website.

We’ve added a smores bar to the favorites section. Milk chocolate, marshmallows, and teddy graham crackers, it might be the best bar we’ve ever made.
Although the chocolate doesn’t come pre-melted (at least we hope it doesn’t) it will definitely remind you of all those times you sat by the campfire melting marshmallows. The good thing about this bar is that it isn’t as messy as eating a real smore (we saw Eric eating a smore once, we’re pretty sure most of it ended up on his face instead of his mouth.)
Thanks for all the weeks suggestions! If you have anymore, don’t hesitate to let us know at info@chocomize.com.
We recently had a photo shoot at our office. Chocomize is going to be featured prominently in one of the biggest magazines in the country (in terms of circulation.) While we are keeping the publication secret until it hits stands, we are interested to see if anyone can guess which magazine it is. The person who correctly guesses which magazine we will be featured in will win two FREE custom chocolate bars of their choice. Below is a photo of one of the photographers setting up his equipment. Good luck guessing!

instance, is chocolate high in caffeine? Do they cause cavities? Are they bad for your health? With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we know everyone will be eating lots of chocolate (whether it is out of happiness or depression we’re not sure.) This blog post is going to address some of the myths about chocolate.
1. Chocolate causes cavities: There is a popular belief that chocolate causes cavities in your teeth. This is not exactly true. Cavities are formed in a somewhat complicated manner. All food is broken down and formed into acid. Some of the acid that remains in your mouth eats away at the enamel on your teeth, forming cavities. Studies have shown that there are elements in chocolate that actually strengthen the enamel on your teeth and thus help prevent against cavities. In fact, a lot of toothpaste companies have come out with chocolate tooth paste to appeal to a broader range of consumers (chocolate toothpaste sounds great to me.) So although we still recommend you keep brushing your teeth, you’ll be doing your teeth a favor by eating a custom chocolate bar from Chocomize!
2. Chocolate contains a lot of caffeine: Another popular myth about chocolate is that it contains high levels of caffeine. Actually, a normal 1.5 oz chocolate bar contains the same amount of caffeine as a cup of decaf coffee! To give you an idea of how much caffeine that is, a cup of decaf usually contains around 5 mg of coffee while a cup of coffee can contain anywhere from 60-140mg of caffeine. Nick still swears that he can’t have chocolate past 5 without staying up all night while Eric sometimes falls asleep with half a bar still in his mouth.
3. Chocolate is an aphrodisiac: This is probably one of the most well known myths about chocolate. A lot of people swear that chocolate is a powerful aphrodisiac. While we here at Chocomize don’t want to dispel this legend right before Valentine’s Day, there are in fact no studies that back up this popular legend. We’re not going to nitpick this one though; we think giving a custom chocolate bar for Valentine’s Day is the perfect gift for your special someone on Valentine’s Day.
4. Chocolate Causes Acne: We’re pretty sure everyone’s parent has told them some point in their life that eating too much chocolate is going to give them acne. Numerous studies have shown, however, that chocolate has no effect on acne. In fact, most researchers are pretty sure that diet in general has no effect. Either way we’re pretty sure you’re mom just wanted to get you to eat your vegetables (or you could eat a healthy ingredient like flax seeds ON your custom chocolate bar itself.)
5. Chocolate contains high levels of saturated fat: Chocolate actually contains a special kind of saturated fat called stearic acid. Studies have shown that stearic acid does not actual increase fat the same way other typical saturated fat does, and in fact can actually be beneficial! We aren’t doctors and we haven’t done the research ourselves, but Nick, one of our founding members, is a lightweight rower and he still manages to make weight even though he is constantly eating chocolate all day (we’re giving everyone a hard time in this blog entry if you haven’t noticed.)
6. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs: Whoever told you not to feed chocolate to your dog was actually not kidding! Chocolate can be toxic to many animals including dogs, cats, parrots, and horses. These animals can’t process the chemical theobromine and too much chocolate can cause them to die. How much chocolate does a dog have to eat in order for it to be lethal? It only has to be around a pound of regular chocolate for it to be lethal to a dog, but even a small amount can cause a dog to be sick. So make sure that you save the custom chocolate bars for yourself and don’t leave them lying around!
We hope this blog post has answered some of your questions regarding chocolate. Our custom chocolate bars make a great gift for Valentine’s Day and we hope that by dispelling some of the more discomforting myths about chocolate you’ll be more likely to buy for that special someone!

It's time for the ingredient of the week! This blog post has been a little delayed. Things have been pretty busy over in Chocomize land. We've been getting a lot of orders (thanks to all our customers!) and had a lot of great responses to the customer survey we sent out last week. In addition, Chocomize has been getting a ton of press lately both on and off the internet. To find out more about this, check out our past blog posts or check out our press page.

So this week's featured ingredient is actually more of a topping. It is our happy birthday plaques! Our custom chocolate bars are extremely popular for gifts (we definitely have solved your Valentine’s Day problem) especially birthday gifts. We’ve featured other great birthday items in the ingredient of the week, like our candle holder, but we’re proud to say that the happy birthday plaques our definitely our favorite.
As you can see in the picture, our happy birthday plaques are written on a white background. They are completely edible (we don’t put anything on our bars that aren’t) and are made out of an always popular and tasty substance: sugar.
If you’re looking to make and give a custom chocolate bar to someone for their birthday we definitely recommend our happy birthday plaques. We think they go well with our candle holders, but if you’re looking to make a festive bar (a birthday is always a good time to celebrate no matter how old you are turning) we recommend you add sprinkles.
Thanks as always to people who keep sending in suggestions for us to add to our list of ingredients. Coming soon is going to be a Valentine’s Day tab where we feature new and special ingredients great Valentine’s Day bars (think I love you plaques, hearts, Happy Valentine’s Day plaques, etc.) Stay tuned for updates and as always if you have any questions or comments you can reach us at info@chocomize.com.
Just wanted to give everyone an update on all the great press we've been getting. We recently were visited by the Burlington County Times. Two reporters came to our facility to take pictures of us and our chocolate. They wrote a great article which you can read in our press section. Here's a picture of them at our facility with us:

In addition, we've been featured in a ton of new blogs, including brides.com. Our custom chocolate bars have been really popular as wedding favors. For those of you who don't know, we can custom design not only the ingredients in our chocolate, but the packaging on the boxes as well! Custom chocolate bars make a really classy and unique gift. If you are planning a wedding in the future, or know someone who is, I recommend checking out our special weddings page here.
Stay tuned for more updates on press, as well as the upcoming ingredient of the week! If you are interested in reading the brides.com blog, or any of the other new blogs, check out our press page.
Thanks to everyone who has filled out the survey so far! We’ve had a lot of great and helpful responses. Below is some of the feedback we’ve gotten from customers, as well as some changes we plan on making based on the responses so far…keep it coming!
Comments on overall experience:
-“ Unique packaging; I like the ingredients on one side and the scoring of the bar on the other; like the size/portion of the bar; website easy to use and directions are clear”
-“Great concept and great execution of it! Love your product, your website design & the ordering process (I'm a web designer and programmer, so can appreciate good design and user interface). Keep up the good work!”
-“ Not only did I love the idea of customizing my own chocolate, but I endorsed and told everyone about the site at my holiday parties this year. I am sure to buy many bars over this year and many for our Christmas party. Thank you so much!!!”
-“ I think you guys have a great product. I think it's especially nice that you are a local business. I've had a Birkenstock shoe store in Princeton for over 14 years. I like to see young entrepreneurship at it's best. Samples along with orders wouldn't be a bad idea either.”
-“ I was so impressed with your service. I ordered the Sat. or Sun. before Christmas and received my order on Christmas Eve. That just doesn't happen in Hawaii! Everyone with whom I have shared the chocolate has raved about it. You offer an amazing service and a superior product. I am grateful I found you!”
-“ Just to commend you on an awesome job. Keep adding and trying out new ingredients. Keep listening to your customers. Keep up the quality packaging and the reasonable costs. Nothing negative at all about you guys - loved my experience with your website.”
-“ Honestly one of the best chocolate bars I've ever tasted, mainly because the Customer designs it and knows what she/he likes in terms of ingredients. You added extra bacon at my request and even noted that in the handwritten note. That shows such dedication and care for Customers.”
Improvements:
- “nice work - site turned out very well. my only suggestion may be to get it so when you mouse over ingredients, the pic gets bigger. i think the ingredient pictures really sell the product. also would have been good to see more pics of what finished bars look like earlier in the ordering process, i think people like to see vaguely what the finished prod will look like.”
-Thanks for the suggestion. We like to think the pictures of our ingredients look good as well so we are definitely going to make them appear larger when you click on the question mark! We also plan on putting more pictures of the actual bar on our site so you can have a better idea of how great they look.
-“ I thought at Christmas time some crushed candy cane would have been a nice option.”
-Unfortunatly we didn’t think about this until a couple days before Christmas. We have crushed peppermint on the website now and it tastes absolutely delicious! We liked it so much it was the ingredient of the week, make sure you read all about it in our past blog.
-“ I was bummed there was no "sea salt" and no "caramel" as choices but I wrote to you and VOILA! Now you have those! AWESOME!! =) I think a creamy peanut butter would ROCK in a chocolate bar... =)”
-Thanks for the suggestion of sea salt and caramel. We’ve added both to the list of the ingredients and they taste amazing. As for peanut butter, we do have peanut butter drops which taste delicious and come highly recommended.
-“ More suggestions on combinations would be helpful. For example,"if you combine the sea salt with such and such chocolate you get a nice sweet and savory taste or cayenne pepper would give you this kind of taste etc."
-“ A list of suggested combos might be nice, there are a ton of things (that's good) but I'm not sure what goes with what.”
-We totally agree that it can hard sometimes to choose what ingredients to put in your bar with so many great choices. We have a section called favorites which has some of our favorite combinations (guess how we came up with the name?) Some of our ingredients are featured in our blog as the ingredient of the week and we try to have some good suggestions for combinations that go well together. Check out our past ingredients of the week to get a good idea. If you still are stumped, shoot us an e-mail or give us a call, we’d love to tell you what we think about whatever ingredient you’re thinking of.
Thanks again to everyone who has filled out the survey so far. We’ll keep you updated on responses and let you know the final results. Shoot us an e-mail at info@chocomize.com if you have any more questions!
Our new ingredient of the week is pop rocks. Usually our ingredient of the week is a new ingredient that has been suggested during the week.
Today we sent two chocolate bars to the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. President Obama is a fellow alumnus from Columbia University, and we thought that he might enjoy his very own Chocomize chocolate bar (honestly who wouldn’t enjoy one?)He’s been a pretty busy guy this past year, what with getting elected, trying to pass an extensive health care bill, and winning the Nobel peace prize. We decided, therefore, that he could use something to cheer him up. Nothing would be better for that then a custom chocolate bar. It took a little research into his favorite foods, but eventually we decided on two bars that we think he’ll like.

Apparently Barack Obama loves pistachios and almonds. Lucky for him, we have both on our list of ingredients and so we made him a dark chocolate bar with almonds and pistachios. This is a pretty standard chocolate bar that we’re sure most people would enjoy. The second chocolate bar is a little riskier. We read that Obama loves chili as well as hot and spicy foods. In that spirit we made him a chocolate bar that’s sure to pack a punch. It’s milk chocolate with cayenne pepper and chipotles. Both of these ingredients have been extremely popular, but they definitely are not for the faint of heart.
We also packed his very own gift certificate so he can order more chocolate bars (perhaps he wants to get Michelle a nice gift, Barack if you’re reading this we recommend dark chocolate, candied rose petals, chocolate butterfly, and gold flakes.) We also put in a hand written letter that says the following:
President Obama,
We hope you enjoy the chocolates. We heard what foods you like and tried to incorporate them in these handmade chocolate bars. Our three founders are graduates of Columbia College, your alma mater. We had a hard time finding jobs in the recession after graduation so we decided to take up the American spirit of entrepreneurship and start our own company, Chocomize.com, the first in the United States which allows customers to create their own flavored chocolate with the ingredients of their choice. We hope you enjoy!
Regards,
Chocomize,
P.S. Congratulations on the Nobel Prize!
Keep checking back on our blog to get updated on the response from the President.
Think that you know someone famous that should get sent a Chocomize bar? Send us a message at info@chocomize.com or tell us how you feel in the comment section of this blog.
The ingredient of the week is a sugar candle holder that comes with the respective candle. If you've read our blog before, you know how great custom chocolate bars are for gifts. We already have a lot of unique ingredients when it comes to birthday gifts. Take our 'happy birthday' plaques for instance. They really help make your custom chocolate bar stand out when you are giving it for someone's birthday gift. Now we have a decoration that’s going to set your custom chocolate bar apart from any chocolate bar you’ve ever tried: sugar candle holders.

Candle’s on someone’s birthday is a time honored tradition. Customarily the candles appear in some sort of cake, whether they are birthday cakes or mini cupcakes. Now, however, you can give someone a birthday cake in their own custom designed chocolate bar! The sugar candle holders are firmly placed in your chocolate bar so all you need to do is place the candle (which we give you) in the holder and light them! We guarantee you will surprise and delight whoever is lucky enough to get this awesome gift. The candle holders are made from sugar and completely edible (not to mention absolutely delicious.) So if you’re giving someone a custom chocolate bar for their birthday, remember that no birthday gift is complete without any sugar candle holders!
Thanks for everyone who sent in suggestions for ingredients this week. As always we love to hear what ingredients you’d like to have on our website. If you have any ideas be sure to shoot us an e-mail at info@chocomize.com.
The new ingredient of the week is hard peppermint candy! We use crushed candy canes and hard peppermints to give you that delicious and popular mint taste in your custom chocolate bar. This ingredient seems to be especially popular during the holiday season as we’ve been recently flooded with requests by people who were dying to have it in their Chocomize bar.

Ever wondered why restaurants always have mints for people to eat after a meal? Studies have shown that mints help with digesting large meals. A German study recently showed that mints can help alleviate cramps resulting from digestion problems. Studies have also shown that mint helps with memory and context related learning. Restaurants are hoping that the next time you chew a stick of mint gum, or suck on a piece of mint candy, you’ll remember the great (cramp free) meal you had. We were shocked to learn that so much thought went into those little mints we always grabbed when leaving a restaurant, we were always hoping that they would make our breath smell a little better.
We aren’t offering mint for your custom chocolate bar out of some crazy diabolical scheme to get you hooked on our chocolate bars (although that wouldn’t be a bad side effect) we just think it’s a great tasting ingredient. Our hard mint candy is not the first mint ingredient we’ve added to our website. We also have candied mint leaves which have been very popular. Personally, we recommend that you try dark chocolate with mint, blueberries, almonds, and marshmallows. Mint also goes extremely well with white chocolate and oreos.
So if you’re looking for a great tasting ingredient that may or may not (the only thing we guarantee at Chocomize is that it will taste great) help with digestion and cure your bad breath, try the hard mint candy in your next custom chocolate bar.
As always, thanks to everyone who sent in suggestions for ingredients this past week. If you think you know of a great tasting ingredient that you don’t see listed on our website, send us an e-mail at info@chocomize.com. We’ll be sure to add it to our list, and if you’re lucky it might just be the next ingredient of the week!
We had a great article published about us in the Westport, Connecticut newspaper. If you want to read the article, check out our press section, it's really fantastic!
Our friends at hangrypants.com are doing a 40 dollar giveaway on their website. To read about the contest check out their website.
Good luck to the winner!
This week’s ingredient is dried flower mix! This ingredient is a new addition to the list. We already offer other similar decorative toppings like rose and violet petals as well as candied mint leaves. Dried flower mix, however, is an amalgamation of four different types of flowers: mallow petals, sun flower petals, rose petals, and marigold petals.

So we had over 80 different ingredients to choose from for the I.O.T.W (that’s right we went and made ingredient of the week into an acronym) why did we choose dried flower mix? One of things we love besides the great taste of the dried flower mix is the colorful addition the four different flowers give to your custom chocolate bar. As winter approaches and the days get colder and drearier, it’s nice to have something that reminds you of springtime and warmer weather. So if you’re looking for something to cure those winter blues, be sure to add the flower mix to your next custom chocolate bar.
What exactly are some of those flowers in the mix? Most people are familiar with sun flower and rose petals, marigold and mallow petals might be a little more foreign, however. The marigold flower is popular in its decorative use and is commonly used as a decorative device for weddings, religious events, and other festivals. It not only looks fantastic (one of the reasons we like to add it to our custom chocolate bar) but has a combined flavor of mint and citrus, and trust us, that’s a good thing. You probably know the mallow by another name, the hollyhock. This beautiful flower has been a popular addition to lots of gardens, and was even the symbol of the Shoguns in Japan, which makes it a true badass addition to your Chocomize bar.
We want to thank everyone who submitted ingredient ideas to us. Some of the ingredients that we are currently working on bringing to you guys are: poppy seeds, mint, rice crispy cereal, and others. If you think you have an ingredient that should be on our list, or you want to see as our IOTW (we love acronym’s) make sure you send us an e-mail at info@chocomize.com.
