April 29, 2010 Top Five Bar NamesHere are the top five bar names of the week:
April 28, 2010 Chocomize and Chocolate BarkSome of the people who come across our website aren’t looking specifically for chocolate bars, but for something called chocolate bark. Now Eric and I have
So what is chocolate bark? It is usually some sort of homemade chocolate with different types of ingredients sprinkled on top. Because chocolate bark is typically made from home, it tends to be a bit misshapen and resembles something like fallen tree bark (hence the name.) The ingredients vary (I always had something like peanuts or walnuts) but usually they are something that would be found in anyone’s pantry.
There are a lot of similarities between our custom chocolate bars and chocolate bark. Perhaps the most obvious one is that both have the ingredients on top of the chocolate rather than mixed throughout. We have our ingredients on top because we think it tastes and looks better that way. Another similarity is the variety of ingredients that you find in chocolate bark. We boast over 90 different ingredients ranging from the usual nuts and fruits to the unusual like 23 karat gold flakes, happy birthday plaques, candied rose petals, etc. (for a full list check out our CREATION STATION.)
So for those chocolate bark fans out there, design your own personalized chocolate bar instead of eating the same old boring chocolate. I know that this Christmas season we won’t be eating chocolate bark anymore but some custom chocolate bars from Chocomize!

April 27, 2010 Ingredient of the Week: Vegetarian Bacon
I know that ‘vegetarian bacon’ sounds like an oxymoron, but ‘vegetarian bacon’ isn’t made from bacon at all. Made from soy, it tastes just like real bacon but doesn’t contain the fat, cholesterol, or nitrates of real bacon. So if you like having the bitter sweet taste for your custom chocolate bar, give our vegetarian bacon a try!
April 25, 2010 7 Health Facts About Chocolate
We aren’t doctors at Chocomize, but we know there are benefits to chocolate other than just tasting amazing. We did a little research and found
seven health facts that we think you should know about chocolate. If you are a health conscious individual, read about some of the health benefits chocolate might have. Here you go, seven health benefits of chocolate:
1. Chocolate can reduce the risk of a heart attack. A study at John’s Hopkins School of Medicine determined that blood platelets tended to clot less in those who ate chocolate regularly than those who didn’t. This is important because when platelets clot, the can block arteries and lead to heart attacks. Another short-term study done by Harvard University School of Public Health also showed that chocolate can reduce the risk of heart disease.
2. Chocolate can reduce blood pressure. Numerous studies, including the above mentioned one done at Harvard University School of Public Health, have shown that eating chocolate regularly can reduce blood pressure.
3. Chocolate contains antioxidants. Not all chocolates are created equal. Antioxidant flavonoids are found in dark chocolate and are at the root of most of chocolate’s health benefits. Antioxidants are important because they help the body’s cells fight formation of plaque on the walls of arteries which can lead to heart disease. If you are trying to go healthy, it’s definitely better to stick with a dark chocolate bar.
4. The fat in chocolate is made up of three types of fat, two of which are actually good for you. Cocoa butter is made up of equal parts oleic, stearic, and palmitic acid. Oleic acid has been shown to be a ‘heart healthy’ fat, the kind that is found in olive oil. Studies have shown that stearic acid has a neutral effect on cholesterol and neither raises or lowers it. And although palmitic acid is a type of fat that has been shown to raise cholesterol levels, it is only one part of the fat in chocolate.
5. Dark chocolate has a low glycemic index. Certain kinds of dark chocolate have a low glycemic index which means that eating a dark chocolate custom chocolate bar won’t send your blood sugar through the roof. A recent study showed that when flavanol rich chocolate (most commonly dark chocolate) was given to participants over a 15 day period, their blood sugar levels were lower than previously recorded.
6. Chocolate contains numerous chemical compounds that have been shown to be ‘mood-elevating’. Why does chocolate make you feel so great? It contains theobromine, caffeine, and phenylethylamine. All of these compounds are forms of stimulants and can release endorphins into your brain. Endorphins are what give you that great feeling you get after taking a big bite of a great tasting chocolate bar. Be careful though, theobromine is highly toxic to animals, especially dogs.
7. Chocolate can reduce the risk of a stroke. One study in which almost 45,000 people participated in showed that those who regularly ate chocolate were 22% less likely to suffer a stroke than those who abstained from chocolate.
April 22, 2010 National Jelly Bean Day
April 22nd is national jelly bean day (we were just as surprised as you probably are to hear that there actually is such a thing.) Since there is such a day, we decided we would celebrate! Eric and I will be having a contest to see who can eat the most in one day. There’s been a lot of trash talking going on in the office, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to win. Oh, and we’re going to make jelly beans free for the entire day!
I bet not a lot of people knew that April 22nd was national jelly bean day. Here are a couple other interesting (and random) facts that people might now know: -Jelly beans originate from a popular Turkish candy called ‘Turkish Delight’ and they are hundreds of years old. -The modern jelly bean didn’t originate until around the civil war when a Boston candy company started sending them to Union soldiers to bolster moral. -Jelly beans didn’t become associated with Easter until around 1930 (they original connection was due to their resemblance to Easter eggs.) -Nowadays almost 15 billion jelly beans are sold around Easter alone!  Enjoy your free jelly beans, April 22nd only! -Nick

A couple weeks ago we sent out a survey to all our fans. We had a lot of great responses and some really helpful advice. Here are some of the responses we got from you guys:

been enjoying chocolate bark all our lives. My family always has a couple tins of chocolate bark lying around, especially around Christmas time, and Eric claims that his family gets some from his cousins every year as a present. We didn’t realize right away that people who like to eat chocolate bark would also love our personalized chocolate bars, but the two are actually quite similar.
We have recently added a couple new ingredients for our adventurous customers. For those people who want to try something new for their personalized chocolate bars, they should check out our tasty beef jerky. Our bacon was so popular that we decided to branch out to another type of meat, and so far it’s been a big hit! We actually just removed bacon from the list of ingredients because we want to work on figuring out the perfect way to combine bacon to our custom candy bars. We know we have a lot of adventurous customers who are also vegetarians, and so we decided to add a new ingredient: vegetarian bacon.
We’ve created a new way for you to personalize your chocolate bar, just in time for Mother’s Day! Over the past couple of weeks we have created a bunch of new additions to our website, all of which aim towards you creating the perfect custom chocolate bar. We revamped our entire checkout system and created a ‘name your bar feature’ (check out the previous post to read about the top five names of the past couple of weeks.) We weren’t satisfied with just adding that, however.
