Charity Profile

msf logo colorAs a lot of you know, we donate 1% of the money you spend on your custom chocolate bars to charity. Our belief is that companies should be socially conscious and find ways to give back to the community. The coolest part of the charity program (we think at least) is that YOU get to choose the charity. Right now there are three different charities you can donate to: Doctors Without Borders, Michael J. Fox Foundation, and Action Against Hunger. We’ve raised almost $1,000 dollars for Doctors Without Borders, and in order to try to get it over that mark, I thought I’d do a charity spotlight on them.

Doctors Without Borders was founded in 1971 by a group of French Doctors who believed that EVERYONE should receive health care, regardless of their national border. As of 2007, almost 30,000 people participated with Doctors Without Borders in over 60 different countries. 80% of its funding came from private donations, which means help from regular people. The charity mostly works in areas stricken by war and poverty, places that would normally have a hard time getting access to modern medicine. The organization has received numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.

We love having them as one of our charities, and we’re extremely proud of the amount that you guys have decided to give back to them. Keep up the good work!

Google Loves Us

There’s been a lot going on at Chocomize. In case you didn’t hear, we were featured on CNN.com earlier today. If you haven’t checked out the story, you can read it here.

So that in itself would be pretty awesome, but people liked the story about us so much that they wanted to check out our website, and hence searched for us on Google. So many searched for us, in fact, that we ended up being one of the top searches on Google! If you check out the picture below, you’ll notice that Chocomize is number two for ‘Hot Searches’. Hot searches lists the top 40 search terms that have increased in popularity that day. Out of all the search terms in Google, Chocomize had the 2nd greatest rise in popularity! That’s a pretty good day in our book.

Health Benefits of Chocolate

red-cross-flagA new study published in European Heart Journal provided more evidence that chocolate is actually good for your health (as if you actually needed a reason to eat chocolate…) The study, which was done by the German Institute of Human Nutrition, found that people who ate a quarter of an ounce of chocolate regularly had lower blood pressure and a lower risk for strokes and heart attacks as compared to people who rarely ate chocolate. The most surprising part of this study for us was hearing that there were actually people that didn’t eat chocolate regularly.  These German’s seem to be smart, but that just can’t possibly be true…

Hedge Fund Owner Buys Billion Dollars Worth of Chocolate

2We were pretty sure that no one liked chocolate more than we did. We were wrong. Really wrong. Last week, the head of a British hedge fund bought a billion dollars worth of cocoa beans on the futures market. We’ve written previously about how cocoa beans are traded on the futures market, to refresh your memory check out the blog post here. Not only is that an insane amount of chocolate, he did something that is almost never done. He actually took delivery of all those cocoa beans!

Normally when people buy cocoa on the futures market, they sell their contract before they actually get the cocoa beans (if you’re confused, don’t worry we were too.) Anthony Ward, however, actually received all billion dollars worth of cocoa beans. That is 240,000 tons of cocoa! Mr. Ward bought so much chocolate that he’s earned himself a new nickname ‘choc finger’ after the famous James Bond movie character ‘Goldfinger’.

We were trying to come up with ideas of what we would do with all the chocolate. The best thing we could think of would be to declare a national Chocomize day of celebration and give everyone free chocolate. I doubt that this is what Anthony Ward is planning on doing (he’s hoping that the price of cocoa beans will incease so he can sell all his cocoa at a profit.) Either way it’s hard for anyone NOT to be jealous of someone with all that chocolate. I guess we’ll have to just go eat some Chocomize bars until we feel better…

Salsabol

salsa bowl header

Sometimes we hear about an idea that’s so awesome we can’t help but to tell our favorite people about it (I’m talking about you guys) even if it doesn’t have anything to do with chocolate. We recently heard about a company started by fellow Columbia University graduates that is one such thing. What’ssalsabol the great idea? It’s called Salsabol, www.Salsabol.com. These two geniuses were tired of spilling salsa all over the table every time they had a party. Instead of just wasting money on buying new salsa, they decided to take matters into their own hands and invented the ‘salsabol’.

So what is the salsbol? The picture should be pretty explanatory, but the geniuses behind the ‘bol explain it best: ‘the salsabol is an elegantly crafted ceramic bowl which features a curved rim that pushes your salsa or dip back onto the chip for the perfect scoop, every time.’ In short, it’s the perfect solution for all your salsa problems (and makes for a great conversation starter at parties.)

We’re all about great party ideas at Chocomize (hint hint try our personalized chocolate bars for your next party) and these ceramic dip bowls are perfect for your next get together. We’re thinking about getting a couple for the office. We probably would just fill them with melted chocolate and then dip pretzels and cookie dough to eat, but that’s just us…

BareFootTess Women's Shoes

barefoottessshoeWe at Chocomize understand what its like to sell a product that is difficult to find in all the stores. That is what makes all of our mass customization businesses unique and useful – sometimes exactly what you want isn’t on the shelf. That is why we have established a strong relationship with BareFootTess.com, a website that sells women’s shoes in world exclusive sizes 10-15. Tess, who wore size 11, was passionate about making sure that nobody else experienced the frustration that she had when she found that her options were limited by size and, in 2005, opened up her e-store - “because style doesn’t stop at size 10”. For a 15% discount on your order from barefoottess.com, use the code CHOC15.
